ExtremeZ-IP File Server: Kerberos
ExtremeZ-IP’s support of Kerberos provides “single sign-on” authentication between Mac OS X clients and all ExtremeZ-IP File Servers within Active Directory. This means that users only enter their username and password once to access all ExtremeZ-IP managed file servers and other Kerberized network resources without re-entering their username and password.
ExtremeZ-IP is the only AppleShare (AFP) server for Windows that supports Kerberos.
Kerberos is a network authentication protocol created by MIT, adopted by Microsoft as a standard part of Windows 2000/2003 and Active Directory and adopted by Apple in Mac OS X. Kerberos uses encryption techniques to virtually eliminate the risks of sending passwords over the network and to reduce the number of times users must enter their username and password.
Mac clients that authenticate against Active Directory when logging into Mac OS X will be able to automatically connect to ExtremeZ-IP file servers. If not using Active Directory logon authentication, then Mac OS X clients will be prompted once for username and passwords but then automatically connect to all ExtremeZ-IP file servers.
User Benefits
- Enter your username and password once to access ExtremeZ-IP file servers
- Connect to Windows file servers as easily as to Mac OS X file servers
- Protect your username and password on the network
Administrator Benefits
- Remove the concept of “Mac accounts”. All accounts are seamlessly managed together under Active Directory or other LDAP server.
- Improve security of usernames and passwords on the network to the same level as Windows
- Improve the productivity of your Macintosh users
- Reduce security related hassles for your Macintosh users
