What's New in ExtremeZ-IP Print Server?

ExtremeZ-IP Print Server remains the only solution on the market that fully integrates Windows servers with Mac OS X for easy to use TCP/IP printing. Print Server allows Mac and Windows clients to spool and print PostScript jobs to printers and other devices managed by Windows 2003/2000 Servers or Windows XP using the TCP/IP protocol instead of AppleTalk.

ExtremeZ-IP Print Server delivers a number of crucial improvements to enable it to scale to support large organizations.

The major features include:

  • Eliminate AppleTalk: Eliminates need for AppleTalk protocol on the network with a completely TCP/IP based printing solution and ExtremeZ-IP Zidget™, which preserves the simple-ease-of-use that AppleTalk provided for service discovery. Elimination of AppleTalk is an important goal in many organizations that can result in significant cost savings and network simplification.

  • ExtremeZ-IP Zidget: An innovative, simple way to discover and set up print queues. Using the ExtremeZ-IP Dashboard widget or a web page users can quickly and easily discover and setup print queues - no confi guration or end user PPD selection required! Using the ExtremeZ-IP Zidget administators can:

    • Organize printers by "zones" to map to legacy AppleTalk services
    • Build a simple hierarchy so users can search on location or other characteristics
    • Set up maps or other web pages that allow users to browse directly to printers and have them configured
    • Overcome and workaround the limitations of Bonjour on the WAN

  • Bonjour Automatic Printer Discovery: enables simple, instant printer discovery and configuration straight from the Print Dialog using an industry standard technology that is built into every Mac OS X client. No need to use the Print center, remember IP addresses or guess which PPD file to use.

  • No Client Software Required: Bonjour printer discovery features eliminates the need to install the ExtremeZ-IP Print client on multiple machines reducing the burden on your IT staff and allowing for even faster deployment.

  • Windows Users Accessibility: as the first and only Windows print server to support Bonjour, ExtremeZ-IP 5.1 allows Windows users to gain the benefits of ExtremeZ-IP Print Server through PPD hints, logging/tracking and queue management.

  • Scalable: Scales to support the workloads that high volume customers require (scales to host 1,500 queues on both TCP and AppleTalk), allowing administrators to successfully consolidate print server software and reduce license and management costs in dealing with multiple print servers. The print server engine allows customers to process tens of thousands of print jobs per day.

  • Multiple Print Queue Management: allows system administrators to manage multiple print queues simultaneously and change the order of the jobs within the queues.

  • Automatic Replication of Windows Print Queues: Administrators can automatically replicate Windows print queues into Mac queues hosted by ExtremeZ-IP. Queues are automatically configured to send the incoming jobs to the existing Windows queues.

  • Improved Cluster Support: now supports active-active cluster configurations and provides increased availability, scalability, and support for server consolidation efforts. Additionally, multiple virtual servers can be configured on each cluster node, with each virtual server running in its own memory space, providing enhanced stability and scalability.

  • PerfMon/Microsoft Operations Manager Support: Instrumented to provide administrators with important performance and health information using standard tools like PerfMon and Microsoft Operations Manager. Administrators can use these tools to monitor the load on the server, detect problems with print queues, and diagnose performance bottlenecks.

  • Built-In ExtremeZ-IP Print Accounting: prompts for and validates administrator controlled account codes at print time and tracks detailed print job information for print cost recovery and allocation. Fortune 500 corporations, advertising agencies, service organizations and educational institutions all benefit from the many features of this easy to use print cost tracking software. ExtremeZ-IP Print Accounting is compatible with standard off-the-shelf software packages, supports printing via TCP/IP or AppleTalk and works with any PostScript print spooler or printer and does not require printing via the ExtremeZ-IP Print Server.

  • IPv6 Compatible: Insures Mac compatibility and compliance with 2008 IPv6 mandate while maintaining a stable, compatible file sharing platform for Mac desktops.
